Sunday, Monday, Happy Days! I'm going to be doing a lot less, as it's Sunday. I had planned to go full steam today, but I think I should calm down a bit on Saturdays and Sundays.
For the last 2 days I've been looking at the long-term viability of using Sketchfab for showing (showcasing) my models, sharing them, and embedding them in things I talk about, and I find, based on what's going on with most of it migrating to fab.com, that it would be folly to continue to use it to showcase my models.
I believe from what I have read that there's a high chance that it will eventually get fully shut down, so as my whole ethos is not to rely too much on platforms and build my own, I've taken another look at the website I intended to use for this type of thing, my website fesothe3d.com.
Before I moved to static hosting, I was developing a WordPress website for it, and it was looking great, but I abandoned it because of a number of reasons, partly because of the move to static. I did start to develop it again based on the template I have created for my other websites, but it needs some more TLC.
Random Artwork:
This is a 3D model of a Shrine that I’ve created and shared on my Sketchfab. It's not related to this post itself; I just like dropping in whatever’s on my desk. to break up the text and keep the Dispatch feeling like a real studio log. Be sure to check out the model! https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/shrine-by-velivian-fesothe-3be39e6fb35148af9d38d677894e726e
I've decided that I will continue to fix the website, and then instead of just linking out to Sketchfab or using its embed system, I will develop my own hosting and embedding system that I can use across all my websites to promote and share my models.
As I intend to run a lot of websites that will have a lot of embedded models for various reasons, relying on Epic Games to maintain that for me is folly, as they can fully pull the plug at any time, and I have heard they have done so before with other things they bought up and integrated.
I would like the functionality to be the same as Sketchfab and the embed system to be the same but embedding links on a specialist subdomain. The positive thing with regard to building out my own website is I can set all the terms and use any licences I wish; I'm not bound by any development scope.
I'm thinking of adding 360-degree panoramas, fully web-based 3D environments and interactive maps and a lot more, so starting now is the best time before I lose full access to Sketchfab. The other reason is I'm working towards becoming a technical arts professor, and I will need to ensure I have at all times access to my work going forwards.
Next Steps:
- Fix the website
- Develop the embedding system
- Write more about it
