Note: No dragons were discussed in the making of this dispatch; it's just a joke title.
I’ve been thinking again about custom keyboards for the specific software that I use, and I’ve had an epiphany about them. Even though they have custom keyboards with custom layouts and keycaps, they’re just essentially a standard keyboard layout and unlikely to have custom extra keys but may have scroll wheels for editing purposes.
They are just essentially pretty keyboards with pretty keycaps that are pretty expensive and, for my usage case, pretty unnecessary because I believe it’s not the expensive custom keyboards that I need; what I should get is the same keyboard I own right now, the one that I use for my day-to-day work, and I should just buy custom-printed keycaps to represent the software I use on a per-extra-keyboard basis.
My thoughts now are simply to purchase multiples of the same keyboard I use day to day and just assign each of them a program and have custom keycaps made; this would be much more efficient and will ensure I keep the same keyboard size and layout I use daily.
Random WIP Artwork:
This is just a quick work‑in‑progress model of a Heart I’ve been experimenting with. It’s not related to the post itself, I just like showing you some of my human created art, by dropping in whatever’s on my desk to break up the text and keep the Dispatch feeling like a real studio log. https://www.bokunofanservice.com/search/keyboards/
The keyboard I picked for my day-to-day is the Havit Mechanical Gaming Keyboard, a small keyboard with MX switches that does support custom keycaps.
Havit Keyboard:
It's, as you can see in the image above, partly orange. I do represent myself in red online, but because I found a piece of slop AI artwork that I liked and it was partly orange, I changed my PC color scheme to orange and somehow acquired the keyboard before I did this.
I am working on recreating the slop artwork with human-made 3D art to replace it as my desktop wallpaper, but as you can imagine, it's furry artwork of an engineer in a robotics factory.
So moving forward I'm going to be buying more keyboards of the same brand and will look into what custom keycaps I need and make a decision on what programs I need one for.
Three of my main programs will be Unreal Engine, Blender, and Hexagon 2.5, so they will likely get individual keyboards.
I'm not yet sure where I will store them when not in use. I could get some undershelf shelves, which might work, as my desk is long enough to at least store maybe 3 or 4 of these compact keyboards, and I think that might be enough for my ongoing work needs.
As for dragons, I seem to have slept like one day to day, as I have been busy all week and not posted enough content; hopefully I can catch up with my work over this weekend.
